Mycelium Music Lessons is a music studio with an innovative approach:
Each lesson is a collaborative experiment between student and teacher. The typical piano lesson is redesigned around the principle of Integrated Creativity, incorporating composition, improvisation, and music technology.
Instead of the narrow focus of traditional music lessons, my teaching philosophy follows a model found on the surface of forest floors: the mycelial network. The mycelial network is an ever-growing, connecting organism, which joins forests together. It sprouts its tendrils into all sorts of unknown places, taking in anything and everything it can.
Every lesson is an opportunity for collaboration & exploration between the student and teacher. This means a radical openness to new ways of interacting with, creating, and being inspired by music.
In contrast to the vertical, narrow focus of traditional music lessons, the mycelial network moves laterally. For students, this means there is no ready-made goal. Progress is measured by the exploration of musical territory, and directed by the student's interests.
Students of Mycelium Music Lessons aren't limited to music written by others. They are an active part of musical creation, through one of three paths: composition & songwriting, improvisation, or music production.
My Integrated Creativity piano program for kids, teens, and adults. Learning the piano is integrated with a creative focus, through one of three paths: composition/songwriting, improvisation, or music production.
