Piano lessons in North Orange County for teens that prioritize self-expression through composition, improvisation, and music production.
My lessons focus on two fundamental goals: helping students find their unique musical voice, and inspiring them with a tool-belt of techniques to express that voice. Below are our four foundational pillars, upon which your teen will build their own distinctive sound.
Every lesson is a one on one session between student and teacher. This allows lessons to be unique to each student, giving them the focused time they need to develop into a modern musician.
I follow the passion and curiosity of each student, empowering teens to explore the music that matter to them. Whether that be pop, jazz, classical, or something else entirely, our lessons follow the path your teen charts, encouraging them to be an active force in their musical journey.
Teens will learn how to turn a page of notes into music, a key step in becoming an independent and capable musician for life. Being able to read music will allow them to play the songs that matter to them, and write down songs of their own.
Students have the opportunity to perform for an audience, building the confidence to share the music they love. This includes bi-yearly recitals, as well as performance opportunities in the local community.
For a teenager, I believe the best way to build confidence in their art is to be an adult who takes their ideas seriously. Although still young, teens have over a decade of musical inspirations they're bringing to the table. The goal of our lessons is to synthesize these inspirations into a unique musical voice, which we'll work on expressing through three key areas.
Students will learn to make music in the moment, where each note is a new chance for musical discovery. Versed in improvisation, your teen will be able to come up with songs on the spot, jam with their friends, and play original solos on their favorite tunes.
Teens are guided through writing their own songs, from deciding the first note to getting their name on the page. Their songs become a part of piano practice, getting students excited about technique and repertoire, and are premiered at our bi-yearly recitals.
Students have the opportunity to learn music software like Musescore,
Garageband, and Logic, giving them the tools to write down, remix, and record their own music. Daily practice apps like Tenuto & Notes Teacher are also used to help reinforce fundamentals.
Learning is a constant process, and shouldn't stop when the lesson is over. Mycelium Music Lessons offers multiple avenues for your teen to be an active force in their musical development, in addition to their recurring lesson time.
Your teen will participate in a community of young creative musicians. Every week, they'll have the opportunity to share some aspect of their musicianship, in the form of a video submission: a piece they're learning, a song they're writing, or an improvisation. They'll receive feedback from peers, and take inspiration from their work.
Lessons include free access to Vivid Practice, an app that helps students learn with proven, science-backed practice methods. Vivid Practice will also include your teen's weekly assignments, and allows them to ask me questions about their music before their next lesson.
Twice a year, your teen will have the opportunity to perform their music for their friends and family, building confidence in their art and giving them concrete goals for their musical development. Recitals give your teen the opportunity to premiere their original songs, where they can share their music with a receptive audience.
