Find & Develop Your
Musical Voice

Your life-long experiences with music & sound have shaped the way you hear the world around you. In our lessons, we'll draw from this wealth of experience, working to refine your wide musical inspirations into a distinctive musical voice.

Explore Inspirations

Think about the sounds you love: your favorite song, a sound from nature, the timbre of an instrument, or your favorite chord. Our lessons will begin by exploring the music & sounds that are meaningful to you, and discovering connections to new kinds of sound.

Sift & Experiment

When you find something that strikes you, we'll investigate why. In our lessons, we'll collaborate to answer the question: "what is it about this piece of music, at this moment, that stirs something inside of us?"  We'll experiment using the techniques you discover, incorporating their sounds into your own process.

Integrate & Repeat

From these inspirations, sounds, and techniques, you'll begin to build a musical vocabulary. As we practice composing with these ideas, they'll start to become a part of you, moving from a conscious process to a fluent musical voice. This cycle will repeat as you discover new music & sounds, allowing your musical voice to evolve with you.

Methods & Theory

While intuition is a powerful resource, it can be daunting to delve into the freedom of a blank page with musical intuition alone. In addition to refining your intuition & musical ear, our lessons equip you with compositional methods, tools, and music theory — resources to draw upon alongside your ear.

Sifting for Golden Seeds

In your lessons, you'll learn how to start a piece of music with a single seed. This is a small unit of inspiration, such as a chord, two notes, or a single word. From this seed, you'll learn how to develop long-form works, which seamlessly grow out of the starting material.

Guided Composition Exercises

Every time you write a piece of music, you learn something new. For new composers, however, finding your first notes can be a daunting task. To help build confidence in your voice and find musical footing, we'll start with a series of 60 second composition exercises. These exercises start small: a solo piece. You'll move to a duet, then a quartet, voice & piano, and various other ensemble types, giving you a strong grasp on writing for a variety of instruments.

Demystifying Music Theory

In our lessons, we'll demystify the intricacies of melody, harmony, rhythm, and form. Using the music you love as examples, you'll begin to understand how music works behind the scenes. Armed with music theory, the open-ended task of composition becomes a lot less intimidating.
